Mike Julian – Director of the Commercial Music Program Los Angeles Valley College where he developed and implemented a Commercial Music Associate’s Degree involving Music Composition and Arranging, Recording Engineering, Digital Audio and MIDI Editing, and Computer Music Notation. Many of the graduates are presently working successfully in the music industry.

Mike attended the Eastman Conservatory, Film Scoring at UCLA, and is a graduate of the Grove School of Music Film Scoring Program under Mundell Lowe; and Composing and Arranging Program under Dick Grove. After graduating from the Grove School of Music he was hired on staff as Director of Engineering for Created and taught a 40-week program, designed and installed several recording studios, recorded and mixed all writing and vocal projects (from small groups up to 50-piece orchestras), and oversaw and coordinated the Recording Engineering Program with the other music educational programs. He was the Director of the Grove Mac User Group created to assist students and working professionals in the pursuits of computer-aided music creation; cutting edge at the time.

As well as designing and building recording studios, Mike worked as a recording engineer on film and television dates, with projects like the Super Bowl XXXII Halftime Show, “A Tribute to Motown’s 40th Anniversary”, and was the house mixer at the Moonlight Tango in Los Angeles, CA, working with ‘Big Band’ talent like Frank Sinatra Jr., Jack Sheldon, and Bob Flores.

Mike’s musical roots are as a performer and arranger, playing with top-billing acts in major nightclubs across the country, opening for such acts as George Carlin, Chuck Mangione, and Frankie Valli. With ‘The Brass Buttons’ he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show with Liza Minnelli. Brass Buttons signed with Sid Bernstein Mgmt. and Atlantic Records. Working with Tommy Dowd and Arif Mardin, they released a single produced by Gene Cornish of The Young Rascals. Mike was the music director for Mickey Rooney’s wife, singer Jan Chamberlin; he also toured the South of France with his jazz ensembles.
