“Problem Solving in Film Orchestration.”

Ladd will share solutions he has encountered in his film orchestration career: such as dealing with sustained low brass in Hans Zimmer’s “Crimson Tide,” to alternating low winds in Harry Gregson-Williams’ “Live By Night,” to creating the desired sound for the villain in Heitor Pereira’s “The Smurfs,” as well as other situations. Other topics include too much information in the midi file versus not enough; unusual instruments and instrumentation; and insights into writing for live players.

Ladd McIntosh has been a film orchestrator for 26 years. His orchestrations can be heard on 133 major motion pictures. He is the principal orchestrator for Harry Gregson-Williams and has worked for Hans Zimmer, John Powell, Heitor Pereira, Klaus Badelt, Mark Mancina and Paul Haslinger.

Ladd’s orchestration credits include: The Equalizer, all the Shrek films, Despicable Me 2, The Zookeeper’s Wife, Gladiator, Unstoppable, The Lion King, The Rock, Speed, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Live By Night, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, The Taking of Pelham 123, The Town, Cowboys and Aliens, Pirates of the Caribbean, Man on Fire, Crimson Tide, The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince of Persia, Antz, A League of Their Own, and many more.

He has published over 100 compositions, mostly in the jazz idiom, and he has written arrangements for Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Eddie Daniels, Connie Stevens, Cheryl Bentyne, Anna Mjoll, Monty Alexander, and the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus, Ohio.

As a jazz educator, he taught at The University of Utah, Westminster College (Salt Lake City), The Henry Mancini Institute, California State University–Northridge, Long Beach City College and The Dick Grove School of Music. McIntosh was chosen by Jimmy Lyons–founder of the Monterey Jazz Festival–to be the first director of the California High School All-Star Band and performed with that stellar group at the festival for six years. He has written all of the music for the Ladd McIntosh Big Band (since 1980) and the Ladd McIntosh Swing Orchestra (since 2007).

Ladd was named the 2007 Alumnus of the Year by The Ohio State University School of Music,  and was awarded the Music Citation by the Ohioana Library that same year. In 2017 he was given an award by The Ohio State University School of Music in recognition for having been the vanguard of jazz studies at that school fifty years earlier. He is in the California Jazz Educators Hall of Fame.

MODERATOR: Kim Richmond, president of ASMAC, is based in Los Angeles and works as a freelance musician, doing studio work, shows, and various jazz and classical venues. His reputation is primarily as a doubling saxophonist (most often lead alto saxophone, doubling on flutes and clarinet). He is considered a jazz stylist and holds a position of high musical respect among his peers, both as a player and as a composer/arranger and leader.
