ASMAC’S Bill Conti Big Band Competition Concludes With Winning Performances

7 July 2017

On Wednesday night, July 5th, ASMAC held the readings of the three winning compositions/arrangements from the Bill Conti Big Band Competition. A capacity crowd shared the evening (standing room only) and it was truly inspiring to know that three talented young composers were well on the road to making an impact in our business.

It was held at the wonderful and historic Runway Studios (Formerly Evergreen). ASMAC’s President Kim Richmond recruited colleagues to fill out the terrific band and they did an amazing job of bringing the three finalists music to life!

Each winner rehearsed their piece accompanied by constructive critiques from both Kim Richmond and members of his ensemble followed by a full performance of each, all receiving standing ovations. The winners also received their award during the evening, and again, ASMAC profusely thanks Mr. Bill Conti for his generosity in once again sponsoring this annual competition.

The three winners were:

1st place: Neil Carson, “Ballad for the Hopeless Romantic”
2nd place: Juan Carlos Mata-Alvarez, “Since You Went Away”
3rd place: Mina Choi, “Paddle Through the Lake”

ASMAC is proud to support talented and emerging arrangers and composers.  This annual competition will be announced again for 2018, and will be joined by at least one more in the Spring of 2018.  For more information, please visit asmac.org or contact the ASMAC office at 818-994-4661
