ASMAC First WEDNESDAYS presents “An Evening with Kraemer” Wednesday December 6th 2017, 7:30 pm

19 November 2017

Joe Kraemer will be discussing his compositional process, from spotting, through thematic development, composition, mocking-up, recording, and finally mixing.  He will be including clips of his work from JACK REACHER and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, including behind-the-scenes footage and alternate cues, as well as examples of sketches and conductor’s scores.

Joe Kraemer has been scoring films since the age of 15 when he composed the soundtrack for his high school classmate Scott Storm’s The Chiming Hour, a feature-length indie shot on Super 8 in 1986.  It was during this time that he first met a young writer named Christopher McQuarrie, a meeting that would lead to three career-defining projects for Kraemer The Way Of The Gun, Jack Reacher, andMission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

Kraemer attended the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston to study film composition.  Shortly after finishing college he scored the NBC/Warner Brothers pilot The Underworld, written and produced by Christopher McQuarrie. Though the series was not picked up, the pilot was ultimately repurposed as a TV movie, where it has gained a cult following. Kraemer later moved forward to score McQuarrie’s feature film The Way Of The Gun.

In the following years, Kraemer carved out an eclectic career scoring various genres. He has written music for over 100 films, with about 40 of those just for the Hallmark Channel/Larry Levinson Productions. Furthermore, he has scored for episodic television, television movies, documentaries, and short films, including his scores for John Putch’s The Poseidon Adventure and A Time To Remember, as well as the Mystery Woman series, and westerns such as Hard GroundLone Rider and The Trail To Hope Rose.  He has also written the music for The Hitcher II and Joyride 2 for director Louis Morneau, and multiple films for writer-producer Mark Altman, including House Of The Dead 2The Thirst and All Souls Day.

Kraemer’s close partnership with Altman led to scoring the TV series Femme Fatales, a sexy homage to film noir for HBO/Cinemax. Kraemer also wrote the score for the prestigious documentary An Unreasonable Man, an Oscar-shortlisted feature about Ralph Nader, for directors Steven Skrovan and Henriette Mantel. With director Christopher McQuarrie he teamed up again on Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise.

With the release of Dawn Patrol and the box office hit Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, 2015 proved to be another successful year for Joe Kraemer. Kraemer’s score for Rogue Nation went on to be mentioned as Best Score on Film Music Media, Bplus Movie Blog, and MFiles, and landed Kraemer the 2016 Discovery of the Year Award at the World Soundtrack Awards, and Best Original Score for an Action/ Adventure/ Thriller film for the 12th International Film Music Critics Association.

Kraemer frequently does Masterclasses in composition for media for various colleges and organizations, including Columbia College Chicago, Media Sound Hamburg, and the Hollywood Music Workshop. His score for Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans was performed in 2016 by the Dallas Chamber Symphony at the Dallas Performance Hall, which received rave reviews. Kraemer is working on another live-performance of Sunrise in Baden, near Vienna. His work will be featured at the 2017 World Soundtrack Awards. He recently scored the new Amazon Original Series Comrade Detective and is currently working on music for Creeped Out for CBBC/DHX
