performed by the Chris Walden Big Band in Los Angeles, CA
ELIGIBILITY
The ASMAC Big Band Arranging & Composition Competition is open to all Student Members of ASMAC in good standing or Associate Members age 29 or under as of September 1, 2011. Special student joining fee is $25 ($15 initiation fee waived). Contact ASMAC at Asmac@theproperimageevents.com to join.
RULES & GUIDELINES
•CONTENT: Only one work can be submitted per contestant. The work can be an original composition or an arrangement of a pre-existing piece. The work shall never have been published nor publicly performed. If an arrangement, it must show a creative compositional reworking of the original.
•INSTRUMENTATION: 3-5 woodwinds (saxes, flutes, clarinets), 3-4 trumpets (including flugelhorns), 2-4 trombones, piano (optional), guitar (optional), bass, drums
•LENGTH: minimum 5 minutes; maximum 10 minutes
SUBMISSION OF MATERIALS
The following materials should be sent to ASMAC, 5903 Noble Avenue, Van Nuys, California 91411.
To ensure fairness of judging, label all materials (application, score and CD) with an alias (NOT your real name). In your submission packet, include a sealed envelope within which you have included
your Alias Form.
•APPLICATION: 1 completed application
•ALIAS FORM: here you will give your real name and alias and all contact information
•SCORE: 4 hard copies plus a pdf copy of your concert score (not transposed). The pdf should be on a CD.
•AUDIO: Recording (CD) of a synth or live rehearsal version of the work
•DEADLINE: All materials must be received by August 1, 2011 and cannot be returned.
ADJUDICATION
•JUDGES: Judges will include ASMAC board members Bill Holman, Kim Richmond, Chris Guardino and Brad Dechter
•WINNER ANNOUNCEMENTS: The winners will be announced on or before November 1, 2011, with the rehearsal date with Chris Waldenʼs Big Band to be on the evening of November 7, 2011 in Los Angeles. Winners must provide/bring a complete set of copied parts by or on November 7, 2011 in order to have their works rehearsed. Transportation to rehearsal is entirely the responsibility of each
winner. In addition, winners will be announced at the monthly ASMAC luncheon on November 16, 2011.
